Why have a personal physician or primary care doctor? We speak a great deal these days about "preventive maintenance" whether in discussing our cars, homes, or our health. Seeing a doctor who knows you and your medical history is your best preventive maintenance plan because that physician is well-equipped to spot your potential health problems before they become dangerous. The regular check-ups that point to rising blood pressure, for example, can head off a more serious disease.

Your personal physician can also provide continuity of care, helping you coordinate the health resources you may need from other professionals.

Relying on an emergency room or urgent care center for routine health care is an expensive alternative and often inadequate replacement for your own personal physician.
